Iron (La Plancha) Out, Cat (El Gato) In on Your Monopoly Board

77-year-old Monopoly wants to update its image by retiring one of its iconic game token the ‘iron’ replacing it with the ‘pussy cat’.

We aren’t sure if this was a move to stroke (forgive the pun) cat lovers around the world.  It was competing against a diamond ring, helicopter, guitar and robot to become the next Monopoly game token.  The cat garnered 31 percent of the popular vote.

Keep in mind this is no low-brow kitty, it has a bling collar and appears to be very well groomed.

Hasbro launched several marketing efforts to have its fans vote on their least liked token and the poor Plancha lost out to the country-bumpkin wheelbarrow and smelly shoe.  Also spared was the race car, top hat (our personal favorite – you know how many Latinos own Lincoln-esque top hats don’t you?), thimble, dog and battleship.

If you want to upgrade your aging Monopoly tokens head over to Target later this month, the retailing zeitgeist of urban dwellers, to obtain a ‘gold’ plated version of all the tokens.

This was the first time Monopoly fans had a say on which game token to kill off and which one to add.  The Parker Brothers who created the game in 1934 are surely turning over in their grave right now that is if they really existed.
