A law that would allow Colorado’s undocumented students in-state tuition rates is closer to becoming a reality after the Colorado House gave its initial approval in a voice vote.
This Friday, Bill 13-033 will go before the same House for a voice vote and is expected to pass. The bill will then go to Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper’s desk for signature, something he has indicated he plans on doing.
The bill is at its further point in its 7th try and since being introduced some 10 years ago. In state-tuition for Colorado’s undocumented students has in some form or another come before legislators six times over the last decade.
Past efforts have stalled due in great part to a Republican controlled House of Representatives. This time around the Republic vote is not needed though there are more Republicans supporting the measure. Advocates are confident of victory since Democrats control both the Senate and House in the state.
If the measure is successful, Colorado would join California, Maryland and Texas that provide some form of in-state tuition support for undocumented students.
