Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada is targeting Latino voters who make up 15 percent of Nevada’s electorate making them an important population segment in his reelection campaign. Despite Reid’s willingness to work on an immigration reform, the truth in Capitol Hill is that in order for any bill to be passed, the Republican vote is essential.
The Latino voters are already disillusioned with false promises by Obama, Reid and Democrats to make immigration reform a top priority in 2009. If Reid is to be reelected he must bring some measures to the Senate floor by November or he could be in trouble.
Last Thursday at meeting between senior Democratic senators and immigration reform advocates concluded that passing an immigration bill would be extremely difficult given the stiff GOP opposition and uneasiness among some Democratic moderates.
