Immigration activists, in support of the DREAM Act, staged a protest at the doors of the Krome immigrant detention center in Miami, Florida.
The protest, held Monday, is just the first of weekly protests planned, said the activists.
“We will be doing this every Monday at Krome or other immigration sites, to ask President Obama to order a moratorium in deportations until Congress decides on the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform,’’ said the president of American Fraternity, Nora Sándigo, an immigrant rights group.
President Obama says he does not see any possibility of legalizing undocumented immigrants unless a substantial number of Republicans sign on to comprehensive immigration reform.
Democratic leaders believe the DREAM Act has a better chance of passing in the lame-duck session than comprehensive immigration reform because the immigrants benefiting from the act would be far less than the wide sweep of immigrants that would benefit from the broader comprehensive immigration reform.
Alongside Sándigo’s American Fraternity, other groups had representatives at the rally including the Florida Immigrant Coalition, the Latin Voter’s League, the Peruvian American Coalition and the Coalition of Latin Organizations for comprehensive Immigration Reform.
