Illinois Mom Who Stabbed Daughter to Death Will Spend Next 25 Years in Jail

On Wednesday, an Illinois woman was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing her daughter she claimed was possessed by a demon.

Nelly Vasquez-Salazar, then 25, of Waukegan, Illinois, was convicted of stabbing her six-year-old daughter, Evelyn Salazar, to death in April of 2008.

Prosecutors said that when her daughter started sleepwalking, Vasquez-Salazar concluded that she was possessed by demon. However, when she was first arrested, she claimed that her daughter had come at with a knife and that she was just defending herself, but when it was determined that Evelyn was stabbed 11 times, the mother’s story changed.

After killing her daughter, the mother apparently tried to commit suicide by slitting her wrists. She ended up going to a neighbor’s home for help. At the time, it was reported that in Vasquez-Salazar’s apartment, that an image of St. Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus were found cut to pieces, seemingly by a knife. Earlier reports stated that the mother may have been suffering from postpartum depression due to a miscarriage she recently had.

It was expected that the mother would enter an insanity plea if the case went to trial, but in December, she pled guilty, and began treatment after of Judge Phillips reportedly stated, “It is the court’s very strong recommendation that you receive mental health counseling.”
