Today marks the 13th day of the UTSA DREAMers’ hunger strike being held to raise support of the passage of the DREAM Act this year. The hunger strikers received alot of attention and support over the weekend to keep them going.
Friday, the Texas Catholic Sisters called on Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) to meet with the hunger strikers. In a letter to the senator, the Catholic sisters asked that she meet with the DREAMers to “engage in an open dialogue, share views on the matter, and come up with a just, workable proposal.” They also urged Senator Hutchison “to join the march of history and play a key leadership role in helping to enact DREAM Act legislation in this session of Congress.”
The strikers also gained support in the form of a vigil held for the cause by the United Methodist Church in Texas on Sunday night.
Also Sunday, two DREAMers spoke with Jorge Ramos, a Univision anchorman, to bring awareness to their cause. DREAMers Claudia Sanchez and Lucina Martinez spoke with Ramos about the importance of the DREAM Act. Below is Sanchez and Martinez speaking with Ramos. (Video in Spanish)
