The number of Spanish doctors who this year have asked Spain’s OMC medical association to certify their qualifications so that they may work abroad has increased by 36 percent compared to 2012.

The total number of physicians who asked the OMC for certification to be able to work outside Spain was 3,279, 874 more than during the previous year.

The OMC said in a communique that the “most significant” change is in the rise of Brazil into fourth place as a destination, with 216 doctors certified to work there this year compared to 11 last year, a change resulting from the Brazilian Mais Medicos program.

The Brazilian government got this project under way to attract health care professionals from different countries for deployment in parts of the country where there are not enough physicians, mainly in rural areas, given that Brazil has one of the lowest indices of doctors per 1,000 residents in South America.

Even so, the preferred destinations for Spanish physicians desiring to work abroad continue to be Britain, France and Germany.

Over the past two years, almost 6,000 physicians have asked for certification to be able to find employment outside Spain, a figure that represents almost the number of people who graduate from Spanish medical schools in an average year, the OMC said.

Since 2011, the demand for certifications provided by the OMC has increased by 125 percent.
