A member of the Honduran presidential guard was fatally shot during an armed robbery in Tegucigalpa, a spokesman for President Porfirio Lobo’s administration told Efe Tuesday.
Cpl. Samuel Calero Vilches was appointed to the honor guard more than a year ago, the spokesman said.
The deadly attack took place Monday afternoon as Vilches, his wife and their son were headed to their home in the capital’s Soto de Comayagüela neighborhood.
Assailants intercepted the family, demanded money and then shot the corporal before fleeing.
Vilches died in the emergency room at Tegucigalpa Military Hospital.
Honduras suffered 85.5 homicides for every 100,000 residents in 2012, compared with a global median rate of 8.8 murders per 100,000, the Violence Observatory at the National Autonomous University said in a study released in February.
The number of homicides in Honduras has grown by nearly 233 percent over the past nine years.
