A homeless man suspected of killing a New York woman on vacation was arrested after reportedly fleeing from Turkey to Syria.
On February 2nd, the body of missing NYC mother Sarai Sierra was found in Istanbul after her family reported her missing when she was not on her return flight.
In a joint operation between Turkish officials and Syrian rebels, a man described by Turkish news reports as a homeless scrap paper collector and only identified as Ziya T., confessed to killing Sierra will she was traveling alone in late January.
The man told police that for nine days after he killed the mother of two he wandered around the area where her undiscovered body laid. In the video confession he states, “On the 10th day, when the police found this dead body, I had to escape into Syria … and now I am captured.”
Ziya T. became a suspect after police received word that a homeless man was often seen wandering around the Old City where Sierra’s body was found. The man’s brother provided DNA that reportedly helped investigators link the man to Sierra’s murder.
Sierra died from a blow to the head.
