The optimists in the world were hoping 2013 would go on without a hurricane this year. That is until Humberto showed up this morning strengthening from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane. Humberto was about to make hurricane history had it shown up three hours later when it would have been the latest hurricane of any season, according to the Weather Channel.
Hurricane season over the Atlantic typically starts in June and runs through November.
Hurricane Humberto is carrying sustained winds of 75 mph barely over the 74 mph needed to be labeled a hurricane. It is located 310 miles from the Cape Verde Islands near Africa and is considered slow moving. The Weather Channel predicts Humberto will likely weaken into a tropical storm over the weekend without making landfall.
