Radio listeners in 11 Hispanic radio markets helped raise $451,282 during its annual Promesa y Esperanza radiothon of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During the two-day broadcast event, Davidson Media group and its affiliates in Charlotte, N.C.; Durham, N.C.; Kansas City, Kan.; Louisville, Ky.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Nashville, Tenn.; Norfolk, Va.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Providence, R.I.; Richmond, Va.; and Springfield, Mass., dedicated more than 30 hours of programming to raise funds for St. Jude, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases.
“We are grateful for the support that the Hispanic community has given to our patients and families through events like Promesa y Esperanza in communities around the country,” said Richard Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude.
“Funds raised through this program help kids in the U.S., Latin America and around the world who benefit from St. Jude’s groundbreaking research and pioneering treatments that help save lives.”
Since its inception in 1997, Promesa y Esperanza has raised more than $74 million towards St. Jude’s mission of finding cures and saving children.
During the radiothon, local listeners in each of Davidson Media’s participating markets had the opportunity to hear heartwarming stories about St. Jude patients, like Emilio. Emilio is a 14-year-old who is currently receiving treatment at St. Jude. He was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor called ependymoma. At St. Jude, Emilio has received the best medical care thanks to the generous donations of Angeles de Esperanza, monthly donors. Thanks to events such as this, families never pay St. Jude for treatment and St. Jude covers the cost of travel, lodging and food for patients and a family member.
