Hispanic fans of the National Football League were able to see games in Spanish starting yesterday on Thanksgiving Day,and including the Super Bowl next January, Fox Deportes announced Wednesday.
The network reported that it has come to a two-year agreement with the NFL to broadcast the league’s football action, and the Spanish coverage of the games would begin on Thursday when the Green Bay Packers face off against the Detroit Lions.
The pre-game commentary for the game on one of the most highly anticipated days for sports in the United States each year, was in the hands of Fox Deportes analysts John Laguna and Francisco Rivera.
The network is “very happy” with its new agreement with the NFL, said Fox Sports regional network president Jeff Krolik in a communique.
He added that being the first network in the U.S. to broadcast the Super Bowl in Spanish is a testimony to the network’s continuous efforts to strengthen its programming and solidify Fox Deportes as the leader in the Latino sports space.
In addition, Fox Deportes will broadcast “Impacto NFL,” a 30-minute weekly news program about the NFL, will produce shows prior to all the games and will create special segments at Fox Central, the network’s news headquarters.
Brian Rolapp, the NFL’s operations director, said that there are more than 25 million Hispanic pro football fans in the United States.
Fox Deportes, which reaches via cable and satellite more than 20 million U.S. homes, of which 6.5 million are Hispanic, said it will continue its efforts to recognize and celebrate the contributions of the Hispanic community by developing special programming to appeal to that group of viewers.
