Hispanic and Latino Jockeys Dominant Todays Kentucky Derby

A cadre of Hispanic jockeys figure to be a prominent force in today’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, inLouisville.  Of the 20 Derby positions there will be 11 Hispanic or Latino jockeys aboard.

There is John Velazquez for example on Animal Kingdom which is a last minute change when his other horse Uncle Mo left the race. There’s Victor Espinoza on the 10-1 favorite Midnight Interlude. 

Some of Derby’s most successful jockeys are Hispanic.  There is Eddie Arcaro the number two most successful jockey in Derby history winning five times in just 12 attempts.  His most famous win was in 1964 with Northern Dancer.  Then there is Angel Cordero with three wins.

Hispanic Trainers include Hall of Famers Lazaro Sosa Barrera, Horatio Luro, Angel Penna Sr., and Pancho Martin.
