Evangelical community leaders in Sao Paolo, Brazil have not been too happy about all ‘the privileges’ the gay community enjoys in the city like their five-day gay pride parade. Therefore a local councilman proposed and won approval for his idea that there be a ‘Heterosexual Pride Day’.
Councilman Carlos Apolinario admits this is a move against gay pride and acknowledges the support of the evangelical community for the idea. Nonetheless he insists he doesn’t support any measure that would discriminate against LGBT people. He notes:
“I have no trouble coexisting with gays as long as their behavior is normal.”
On the other side of the aisle are the Brazilian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Association that sees this as another means to encourage homophobic violence which has been on the rise in the city.
In order for ‘Heterosexual Pride’ Day to become official the mayor of this city of 20 million people must sign it.
