A week of torrential rains throughout the Central American region have left at least 66 dead and displaced thousands of others, with Honduras suffering the most losses at 28.
The rains started mid-week and continued through the weekend resulting in flooding and mudslides. Some of the victims died from lightning striking them. El Salvador with 24 dead has declared a state of emergency and are reporting many have been buried by mudslides.
In Guatemala a state of emergency was also declared and are reporting over two thousand home have been destroyed and eight bridges submerged.
Many Central Americans were isolated when roads were washed out and debris closed other access roads. The southern regions of Choluteca and Valle were the hardest hit in Guatemala and are where most of the deaths were being reported.
