At the North Carolina State Fair grounds this weekend, organizers took advantage of the La Fiesta del Pueblo to register voters for the upcoming elections.
“We believe that one of the best ways to strengthen a community is to give them a political voice,” said Pablo Escobar, who is a board member for the Raleigh-based nonprofit El Pueblo advocacy group.
In its 17th year, this year’s festival saw more candidates and political booths than usual. As is the national trend, the Hispanic vote is important for the candidates to win the election.
North Carolina is expecting close races in many congressional districts and there is a very active debate in the state over SB 1070 which would require immigrants to carry their documents at al times and require police to question people they suspect many be in the country illegally.
