Guatemalan security forces captured three alleged kidnappers in the northwestern part of the country suspected of having abducted a young girl on July 22, an official source reported.
The National Civil Police, or PNC, said in a communique that Diego Leonel Ramirez Garcia, alias “El Loco,” 24; Mario Magdoni Garcia Mendoza, 26, and Mateo Marcos Diego, 35, were arrested on Tuesday as they were negotiating a second payment of ransom money in exchange for the unidentified victim’s safe return.
The arrests were made in the municipality of Neton, in Huehuetenango province, some 372 kilometers (231 miles) northwest of the capital.
Police said that the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of 150,000 quetzales ($19,157) for the release of their hostage.
“The family of the victim had already paid an initial ransom and they were negotiating another payment,” said the PNC without providing any further details.
Agents with the Anti-Kidnapping Task Force are conducting an operation in Nenton to find the minor, who allegedly was abducted by Ramirez Garcia, who was also the one who was negotiating the new payment, the source said.
