The US state department has ruled the green card lottery that ran on May 1st was invalid- after 22,000 people had been notified of their win. A computer glitch is being blamed for the error.
The Diversity Visa Lottery is an annual draw that was set up by Congress in 1994. Over 15 million applicants apply for the 22,000 green cards.
The state department statement said: “We sincerely regret any inconvenience or disappointment this problem might have caused.”
The winners of the next visa lottery will be announced in mid-July.
