Republican Governor John Kasich is seeking to expand the number of state contracts minority suppliers currently receive from Ohio. He has directed his cabinet to look at all state agencies and see how they can increase state ‘set-asides’ by 15 percent for businesses owed by minorities and economically distressed groups.
The bold announcement came as many other states are ignoring or not promoting set aside programs for minority owned businesses in their state. It also came on the heels of Ohio opening up a federal minority business center in Cleveland, the first since 2006.
Kasich, who is a former Fox News contributor, sees the call for more minority contracts as a win-win for the state. He believes it will help communities and the Ohio economy and create successful entrepreneurial role models.
