A German tourist who arrived on the Venezuelan island of Margarita was gunned down Friday and another was wounded, Tourism Minister Andres Izarra said.

“We deeply regret the incident in which a German tourist died on Margarita. Security forces are searching for the criminals,” Izarra said on his Twitter account.

“We are providing all possible help to the injured tourist, and to the tourism company and the German Embassy,” the minister wrote.

The tourists, whose identities have not been revealed, were traveling on a cruise ship and landed for an excursion on the island, Ultimas Noticias newspaper said in its online edition.

As they were walking near one of the main shopping malls on the island, they were surprised by two criminals on a motorcycle.

Last year Izarra announced that the government guaranteed that tourists coming into the country would get all the information they needed to enjoy Venezuela’s leisure activities while remaining safe from criminal attacks.

“Overcoming this culture of violence is an endeavor of the government and of all Venezuelans. Let’s work hard at that,” the minister said Friday.

Venezuela suffered more than 11,000 homicides, down from 16,000 in 2012, according to official statistics, but the independent Venezuelan Violence Observatory said that close to 25,000 people were killed in 2013.
