Comedian and late night talk show host, George Lopez and his with Ann have started divorce proceedings.
Sources say Ann and George had been working out the details of their split for a while, but it only became public knowledge Monday.
The couple has been married for 17 years, and they have a 15 year-old daughter together. They wish to keep the divorce amicable for her sake.
George Lopez is a Mexican-American born in Mission Hills, California. His career skyrocketed in 1999 when his sitcom George Lopez debuted on ABC in 2002 and ran until 2007. In November of 2009, he began his late night talk show on TBS named Lopez Tonight.
In 2004, after years of struggling with a genetic condition that caused his kidneys to fail, doctors told Lopez he’d need an organ transplant, and in 2005 Ann donated a kidney to George. After the successful transplant George lost 45 lbs. in part due to his vastly improved health and chose to bring awareness to the issue, by having his on-screen son, Max, diagnosed with a similar illness.
A rep for George and Ann released a statement saying, “George and Ann Lopez have made the decision to end their 17 year marriage. The decision is amicable and by mutual agreement. They remain dedicated parents, and committed partners in business and their philanthropic organization, The Lopez Foundation.”
