Acclaimed Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez was hospitalized this week in the Mexican capital with a respiratory infection and is expected to be discharged in a few days, his son said Thursday.
The 87-year-old Garcia Marquez, who has lived in this capital for decades, is undergoing treatment at the Salvador Zubiran National Institute of Health Sciences and Nutrition, Gonzalo Garcia Barcha told reporters at the entrance to the hospital.
“They’re going to prescribe him antibiotics, like any of us would when we get sick,” the son of the 1982 Nobel literature laureate said, adding that the author will likely leave the hospital on Monday or Tuesday.
Mexico City’s Health Secretariat, meanwhile, confirmed that Garcia Marquez was hospitalized on Monday due to dehydration and lung and urinary tract infections.
“The patient has responded to treatment. Once he has completed his course of antibiotics, an evaluation will be made on his discharge from the hospital,” the secretariat said in a brief statement.
