A duel immersion publically chartered school where children are fully bilingual by fourth grade has proven to be one of the best in the country. With a population of more than 95% Hispanic, 71% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches, El Sol in Santa Ana California is beating all the odds.
Through a unique program that focuses on the family, the school’s family and children learning center offers aid for medical issues, unemployment, citizenship classes as well as legal aid. All are at El Sol.
First and foremost, we’re a school but the fact that we do all of these other things is based in our belief that a healthy family and a healthy community is an important component of a strong educational experience for the student,” Monique Daviss, the schools executive director said. “We’re looking out for the whole child.”
Each parent is asked to donate a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer time to the school, most parents gladly exceed this.
The school opened in 2001 and spent several years trying to find its groove. Through a network of devoted parents, philanthropists and faculty, these children with limited opportunities are celebrating their achievement as being listed one of the best schools in America.
