Fans of the Telemundo hit of 2011, ‘La Reina del Sur’ will be pleased to hear that the show will be arriving again in their living rooms, but this time in English.
Deadline is reporting that Fox TV Studios president, David Madden, believes the show will be developed as a one hour crime drama and says it may be targeted at cable stations due to its dark and violent storyline. Yet nothing is set in stone and Madden also added that an ‘ABC version’ of the show could also be produced.
The series, ‘The Queen of the South,’ in English, is based on the bestselling book by author Arturo Perez Reverte. The main character, Teresa Mendoza, an innocent small town girl, tries to seek revenge after a recent personal tragedy. Yet as the story develops, Teresa eventually becomes one of the most powerful women in the drug trafficking world. The original series was Telemundo’s most successful series in its 19 year history as a network. It averaged 4.2 million viewers and on the night of its series finale, was the number one broadcast that evening across languages.
David T. Friendly, known for his production of the successful film, “Little Miss Sunshine” will executive produce the series. This will be his first television production. A writer for the show has yet to be determined.
Madden stated that this project was suggested as a means to appeal more to Spanish speaking audiences.
