Colombian painter Fernando Botero said he has finished thirty pieces, and none of them have satirical content.
“I’ve been painting the passion of Christ for the last four or five months. It is a dramatic subject that I’m approaching with a great respect,” said the renown artist.
Botero is uncertain of how many more paintings in the series is going to be, but he’s expecting to show it in New York before 2011 is over.
“It’s a major theme in the painting world,” Botero said “until the sixteenth century, it was a theme explored exclusively by painters.”
The artist also indicated that he won’t be making any sculptures on the subject matter, as he just doesn’t “see” the passion in that medium.
