FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will be the star match-up of the Champions League quarterfinals, while Friday’s draw also produced a tantalizing clash between perennial powerhouses Manchester United and defending champion Bayern Munich.
The other two contests will pit Real Madrid against Borussia Dortmund in a rematch of last season’s Champions semifinals, which the German club won in an upset, and Paris Saint-Germain against Chelsea.
The Madrid club holds the record with nine titles in soccer’s biggest annual competition.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have played to three draws thus far this season, two in Spain’s Supercopa in August that Barça won thanks to a lone away goal at Atletico’s Vicente Calderon stadium.
The teams also played to a scoreless draw in Spanish-league action in Madrid in January.
The first legs of the Champions League quarterfinal matches will be played on April 1 and April 2, while the second legs will take place on April 8 and April 9.
The semifinal matches will be played in late April and the final is scheduled for May 24 in Lisbon.
