Fashion power couple Isabel and Ruben Toledo have announced a collaboration with plus-size retailer Lane Bryant. The couple will design a fashion, outerwear, and accessories line for the retailer that sells to women size 14-to-28. The plus-size retailer has over 800 stores; the Toledo collection will launch in 500 stores initially.
This is the third mass market collaboration for the Cuban, Cuban-American designing duo. The couple designs a swimwear line for Target and a shoe line for Payless. Isabel typically acts as the designer while Ruben as the illustrator, known for his whimsical sketches.
The Toledos will launch the collaboration with a t-shirt and tote bag for the holidays. A ready—to-wear line will follow in 2014. The Toledos said of the collaboration, “Their unique customer base is an inspiring and diverse audience for which we look forward to crafting new and innovative fashions, accessories and even some other categories.”
The plus-size market is often ignored by fashion designers and is valued at $1 billion according to Fashionista.
Isabel Toledo counts the First Lady amongst her many clients, she designed one of Michelle Obama’s inauguration outfits.
The couple is currently working on creating the Jazz Age costumes for the Broadway show ‘After Midnight.’ They are crafting more than 100 costumes for dozens of characters in the show celebrating Harlem’s Cotton Club in the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s.
