Customs agents seized a record 1.3 tons of cocaine aboard an Air France plane that arrived in Paris from Venezuela, the French Interior Ministry said.
The cocaine was found in several suitcases on an Air France cargo flight on Sept. 11 at Charles de Gaulle Airport.
The cocaine has an estimated street value of 50 million euros ($67.6 million), the Interior Ministry said.
The flight arrived in Paris from Caracas.
The Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office, meanwhile, said Sunday it opened an investigation of the attempt to smuggle the cocaine into France.
The United States accused Venezuela earlier this month of not taking sufficient action to comply with international agreements to fight drug trafficking, a charge that was rejected by Caracas.
Venezuela shares a 2,200-kilometer (1,367-mile) border with Colombia, the world’s largest cocaine producer.
