Explosion at Colombian Fireworks Factory Injures 6

A fireworks factory blew up Monday in northwestern Colombia injuring six people, one of them seriously, government officials reported.

The director of the Dapard disaster prevention department, Cesar Hernandez, said that the blast occurred in a gunpowder factory located in the rural portion of the town of Carmen de Viboral, in Antioquia province.

He added that the most seriously injured person - age 19 - was transported by the Colombian air force to a hospital in Medellin, the provincial capital.

Local firefighters were dispatched to the blast site, Hernandez said.

The fire chief of Carmen de Viboral, Oscar Sepulveda, told reporters that one of the injured - presumably the young man taken to Medellin - was burned over 55 percent of his body.
