As violence in Mexico continues to escalate, so does the number of asylum requests coming before federal immigration judges. Jose Alarcon, 27, was denied asylum this week by a judge in Dallas.

Alarcon told The Dallas Morning News last year that he refused to be bought off in Mexico and that he was in a 2008 gun battle in the border city across from El Paso as a result.

A Mexican ex-police officer, Alaron fled the narcotics violence in Juarez, Mexico.

Very few Mexicans are awarded asylum. In the courts. This case was unique as it involved a police officer that was not only fighting drug cartels, but also corruption in his own ranks.
