A long-standing tradition of allowing inmates in Dominican prisons to purchase special amenities has come to an end.

Prior to Friday, wealthy inmates had been able to purchase air conditioners, TVs and TV antennas, and even laptops, but a the Dominican Republic’s chief prosecutor announced that such perks would no longer be available.

Dominican prisons house roughly 22,000 prisons and few have the funds to buy extra comforts, but some, like Rolando Floria, seemed to make his time in almost pleasant.

After he was killed in jail in May 2009, many were outraged to learn his cell was equipped with an air conditioner, a private kitchen, and an LCD television. It was also discovered he was granted visits from prostitutes, something prison officials claimed they knew nothing about.

According to the Associated Press, Friday’s announcement was the first time Dominican authorities have put a stop to the special treatment of wealthy inmates.
