Ecuador was eliminated from the World Cup Wednesday after a scoreless draw with Group E winner France in front of nearly 74,000 spectators at Rio’s Maracana stadium.

The Andean side fought hard and could take some satisfaction from denying the high-powered French offense a goal, especially when the Ecuadorians were forced to play the final 40 minutes down a man after Antonio Valencia was ejected on a straight red card for a vicious foul against Digne.

Alexander Dominguez was outstanding in goal for Ecuador, withstanding the onslaught of strikers Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud and Moussa Sissoko.

Even playing with 10 men, Ecuador got their chances. What they lacked was the ability to finish.

Cristhian Noboa, Enner Valencia, Jefferson Montero, Michel Arroyo and Alex Ibarra squandered scoring opportunities in the second half.

France’s next opponent will be Nigeria.
