Ecuador Increases Wages for Police and Army

The Ecuadorian government has increased army and police pay for several ranks. Thursday’s unrest was spurred by a law that was set to take effect on Monday , eliminating police bonuses. Several people died and soldiers had to rescue President Rafael Correa from a Quito Hospital where he had taken refuge.

Officials insist the raise is not linked to the unrest last week.

The pay increase is between $400-$570 and will be backdated to January.
An army captain in Ecuador now ill make makes $ 2140, while a major will make $2280.

On average Ecuadorean police officers earn about $700 a month; the minimum salary in Ecuador is about $240 a month.
