Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero is in Brasilia, Brazil, December 5 and 6 to lead the United States delegation to the Open Government Partnership (OGP) International Steering Committee meeting and to engage in bilateral discussions with senior Brazilian officials.
The Open Government Partnership Steering Committee meeting precedes a two-day “Peer Engagement” meeting with more than 35 participating countries from around the world. The Peer Engagement meeting will feature civil society experts and government exchange on the development of each country’s OGP action plan aimed at increasing transparency, accountability, and civic engagement in 21st century governance.
Under Secretary Otero serves as co-chair of OGP on behalf of the United States with Brazil’s Minister of State Jorge Hage.
Under Secretary Otero will also hold bilateral meetings with senior government officials, including Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota. She will discuss a range of issues, including the Open Government Partnership, disaster risk reduction and mitigation, and counter-narcotics and law enforcement cooperation.
