Venezuelan-American fashion designer Carolina Herrera is kicking off New York’s Fashion Week by ringing the closing bell at the NASDAQ today.

In honor of the launch of the eponymous Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Herrera along with the executive produce of Fashion Week, Christina Neault will go to Times Square today to ring the bell at 3:45 pm. EST.

The unofficial launch of Fashion Week happened last night at a gala honoring Michael Kors who received the 2013 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion.

The 74-year-old fashion designer has been on the forefront of fashion for decades.  In 1980 she made the Best Dressed List International Hall of Fame and presented her first fashion collection a year later.

Her fashion empire, which earns over a $1 billion in annual sales, includes ready wear, couture, fragrances, sportswear and designer wedding gowns.  Herrera is the daughter of a former governor of Caracas and became a U.S. citizen in 2009.
