Good news for Johnny Depp and Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise and even better news for new cast mate Spaniard Penelope Cruz. Box office reports places the newest Pirates sequel “One Stranger Tides” as the biggest international opening with box office receipts of $256.3 million. Russia was the movie’s biggest opening day market.
In the U.S. alone the movie earned $90.1 million over the weekend making it the biggest domestic box opener thus far this year. Globally the movies’ receipts are pegged at an astonishing $346.4 million while it took $400 million to produce and promote the film.
In spite of a $90.1 million-dollar U.S. opening it falls short of previous Pirate openings. The first Pirates movie garnered $135.6 million in the U.S.
The movie could be on track to gross $1 billion.
