A commuter high-speed train traveling near Barcelona in Castelldefels Playa killed 12 individuals and injured 17 others as passengers exiting another commuter train erroneously crossed the tracks to get to the other side of the station. The train was not due to stop at the station and there are designated underground tunnels for passenger to access the other side of the train station. The station was full of activity in anticipation of a public holiday.
The majority of dead and injured are thought to be students en-route to celebrate St. John’s Day summer festival. Officials believe the young people were trying to avoid the crowds using the underground tunnels and jumped onto the tracks to exit the station more quickly.
