As happens with anyone that is getting older a time of reflection and introspection occurs which is what appears to be happening to President Raul Castro.
In hindsight the 79-year old realizes Cuba’s communism needs rejuvenation and that mistakes had been made in the name of ‘idealism’. Better late than ever we suppose.
Castro was speaking at the 1st congress of Cuba’s Community Party – one hadn’t been held in 14 years – were he spoke of limiting his term and those of others to two five-year terms. Between him and his brother Fidel, they have ruled Cuba for over 50 years.
He urged his fellow Cubans to overcome political inertia and identified the need to ‘rectify errors’ the Cuban revolution had made. All these comments and proposals were unprecedented.
Raul Castro also mentioned his continued commitment to reducing the size of government and encouraging private enterprise. He believes it will only take 5 years to rejuvenate the economy.
All these comments and proposed changes come as the country marks the 50th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs described by Castro followers as the ‘first great defeat for US imperialism in Latin America.’
