Real Madrid will play in the Copa del Rey final for the second year in a row after Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over defending champion Atletico Madrid.
The Blancos entered the second leg of the semifinal with a 3-0 advantage after last week’s triumph at the Bernabeu and a listless Atleti side gave up two goals in the first 16 minutes of Tuesday’s clash at the Colchoneros’ Vicente Calderon stadium.
Both goals came on penalties and both were the work of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese international converted in the 7th minute after he was fouled by Javier Manquillo.
Ronaldo made it 2-0 nine minutes later, taking the shot after Emiliano Insua fouled Gareth Bale in the penalty area.
With the resounding semifinal win, Real Madrid avenged two successive defeats at the hands of their upstart neighbors. Atletico beat the Blancos last year to win the Copa and also came out on top in the clubs’ La Liga match a few months ago.
The Blancos must wait until Wednesday night to find out who they will face in the April 19 Copa del Rey final. Real Madrid archrival FC Barcelona leads Real Sociedad 2-0 after the first leg of their semifinal.
