The headless bodies of a couple were found Tuesday at the bottom of a gully in a poor neighborhood of Guatemala City, first responders said.
A spokesman for the Volunteer Firefighters told reporters that the bodies of the victims, an unidentified man and woman in their mid-20s, were found inside plastic bags.
“The residents found, first, a bundle that looked suspicious, inside which was ... the head of a man,” the spokesman said.
After that, emergency teams scoured the area until they came to the gully where they found the bodies of the pair.
So far this year, more than 100 people have been decapitated in the Guatemalan capital and its environs, deeds that authorities attribute to the feared youth gangs.
Some 4,700 violent deaths, including 550 women, have been registered so far in 2013.
Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla acknowledged some days ago that the year will close with about 200 more murders than the 5,193 recorded in 2012.
