At least 30 houses in the Pacific port of Buenaventura were destroyed by a fire but no injuries were reported, Colombian authorities said Tuesday.
The fire broke out Tuesday morning in Santa Fe, a poor neighborhood of wooden homes where the blames spread quickly, according to firefighters who were dispatched to the scene.
Authorities do now know the cause of the fire as yet but they say it could have been sparked by an electrical short circuit in one of the homes.
The blaze left about 200 people without a roof over their heads in this city in the southwestern province of Valle del Cauca, local media reported.
Buenaventura is Colombia’s main port, but about 50 percent of the local population is unemployed and 80 percent live in poverty, according to figures compiled by social organizations.
