Philadelphia has decided to end its year long agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement service (known as ICE). The agreement had allowed ICE to access Philadelphia’s Police Department database.
Both the Mayor and the Police Commissioner believe the agreement should be terminated.
The sharing of information has lead to deportation proceedings against immigrants arrested on even minor charges. The announcement to terminate the agreement was followed by testimony of individual encounters with police. Several examples were shared of when criminal charges had been dropped but deportation efforts continue.
A spokesman for ICE in Philadelphia, said “Our priority is convicted criminal aliens, getting dangerous people off the street.”
