Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is making progress with his recovery and is not in a coma, his older brother, Barinas state Gov. Adan Chavez, said.

“The head of state continues to respond well to the treatment and his recovery is advancing every day,” the governor said in a statement posted Saturday on the Barinas government’s Web site.

Adan Chavez returned to Venezuela on Saturday from Cuba, where his brother is recovering from cancer surgery.

The 58-year-old head of state, who won another six-year term in the Oct. 7 election, remains hospitalized in Cuba four weeks after undergoing his fourth cancer surgery in 18 months.

The Venezuelan government says the president is battling “complications stemming from a severe lung infection” that developed after his Dec. 11 operation in Havana.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court said Wednesday that Chavez can delay his swearing-in without creating a constitutional vacuum and that Vice President Nicolas Maduro may remain head of the government during the president’s absence.

“We are sure that with the support of God, science and our people, the president will come out on top in this new battle,” Gov. Adan Chavez said.

“The reports circulating on social networks and other media that the president is in a coma and the family is discussing the supposed disconnection of life-support equipment are totally false,” the governor said.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez, Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and Maduro all visited Cuba in the past few days and did not reveal any details about Chavez’s condition.

Fernandez left Havana on Saturday and headed to Asia, but she did not reveal whether she saw the Venezuelan president or what is known about his condition.

Maduro, for his part, met with Cuban President Raul Castro and with Fernandez.
