Catholic Church in Mexico Says Drug Cartels Influence the Government

The Catholic Church in Mexico says that drug cartels exert influence over the government and in some instances even control cities. They are afraid the drug cartel will impose candidates in the July 4 elections that will decide 12 of Mexico’s 31 governorships. The Church says the cartels may also try to stop voters from going to the polls.

Since Mexico launched its anti-drug offensive in late 2006, more than 22,700 people have died due to drug-related violence.
