This weekend Mexican authorities announced the arrest of drug kingpin Martin Omar Estrada Luna, also known as ‘El Kilo’ for his involvement in the mass grave killings recently discovered.
Luna is allegedly a key member of the vicious Zeta drug cartel and ran operations for the cartel in San Fernando, Tamaulipas where to date 126 bodies have been found in mass graves. Other reports have pegged the number of bodies at 145.
El Kilo had been identified early on as a key suspect yet no details were given as to how he was detained or the evidence authorities have on his involvement. There was a $1.2 million reward announced earlier in the week.
The mass graves were discovered after Tamaulipas authorities were investigating reports of kidnapping of bus passengers in late March. The Zeta drug cartel was implicated and they are also blamed for the 72 migrants killed in the same area last year.
Authorities have not confirmed the identities of all the bodies in the mass graves or confirmed they are the kidnapped bus passengers or drug cartel rivals of the Zetas.
