California’s State Assembly is getting ready to vote this week on AB 131 or this state’s version of a DREAM Act after an Assembly committee approved the bill on Friday.

Bill AB 131 would allow undocumented students in California to apply for state funding such as state grants, state university scholarships and fee waivers.  There are approximately 5,500 student who would be the immediate beneficiaries of this Calfornia DREAM Act benefit expansion with the majority attending state community colleges.

This bill would benefit not only illegal immigrant students but also nonresient students who qualified for in-state tuition benefits.  This good news for DREAMer students comes on the heels of the California Assembly passing AB 130 that allows illegal immigrant students to obtain private scholarships offered through the University of California system.

Both AB 131 and AB 130 now face a vote in the Senate before they become law.
