California demographers say the state will soon have more Hispanic residents than white.
According to population projections taken from the California Department of Finance, the Hispanic population will equal that of the white in 2014.
Demographers are also projecting that by 2020, Hispanics will be about 40.8 percent of the state’s population, while whites will be 36.6 percent, with Asians at 13.4 percent and black residents at 5.6 percent.
In 2010, Hispanics made up 38 of the population, with whites at 40. There are currently 38 million Hispanics in California.
By 2049, the overall population of the state is expected to reach 50 million. Currently, Hawaii and New Mexico are the only states without a white-majority population.
Nationwide, as of 2011, 16.7 percent of the total U.S. population was Hispanic, jumping from 12.5 percent in 2000.
