Justice Carlos R. Moreno is stepping down from the California Supreme Court effective February 28th and ten years after being appointed by Governor Gray Davis.
Justice Moreno is currently the only Democrat on the state’s high court and the only one who voted to strike down Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that banned gay marriage.
The court vacancy will give the new Governor of California, Jerry Brown, his first high court appointment. Moreno will return to the private sector possibly returning to a private law practice.
