Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas was arrested Thursday morning after police discovered the bed of his truck was full of illegal fireworks.
Arenas, who once played for the Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic, now plays for the Shanghai Sharks in the Chinese Basketball Association.
At around 2:30 a.m., the 31-year-old was pulled over by California Highway Patrol for speeding. He was reportedly clocked going 80 mph in a Ford pick-up truck.
When the officers approached the vehicle they immediately saw what turned out 100 pounds of illegal fireworks in the bed. At least 20 boxes were seized by officers and the LAPD bomb squad was also called in as a precaution, according to TMZ.
Arenas received a citation for speeding and was charged with possession of illegal fireworks. He was also cited for driving without a license.
He was reportedly released without bail at around 6:45 p.m.
In 2008, the 6’4” guard was chosen as the cover model for the video game NBA Live 08.
Arenas played for the Wizards from 2003 to 2011. In January 2010, Arenas was suspended by the NBA after he admitted to storing unloaded firearms in his locker at the Verizon Center. In doing so, he violated both NBA rules and Washington D.C ordinances. Arenas was charged carrying a pistol without a license. Later that month, he pled guilty to the felony of carrying an unlicensed pistol outside a home or business.
