More than 30 people died Monday and dozens were injured when an overloaded bus skidded off a highway west of Guatemala City, first responders said.
The vehicle plunged into a canyon in the San Martin Jilotepeque district in Chimaltenango province, some 64 kilometers (40 miles) from the Guatemalan capital, according to fire rescue spokesman Cecilio Chacaj.
Among the fatalities were several children, he said.
Traveling on the bus were more than 70 passengers, mostly Indians, according to authorities.
“Many of the injured” have now been admitted to the Chimaltenango national hospital, Chacaj told Emisoras Unidas radio from the scene.
The bus fell crashed 75 meters (245 feet) straight down a cliff, the spokesman said.
The causes of the accident are as yet unknown, though it has initially been attributed to brake failure, authorities said.
The bus of the Transportes San Martineca company had left San Martin Jilotepeque en route to Guatemala City.
